The last decade has been a very important and busy one in the world of technology—especially in the smartphone world. For instance, mobile phones have gone from mere communication devices to smart, do-everything-but-your-laundry devices. Now that the decade has come to an end and 2021 is finally upon us, what major changes should we expect in the next ten years? Here is a list of some major trends that are set to hit the smartphone market this year and in the decade to come.
- No charger in the box
Last year, with the launch of the iPhone 12, Apple decided to lose the charging bricks that come in the box with their devices. This decision was aimed at minimizing global e-waste, making transportation more efficient, and keeping the devices affordable. The concept fits into the current world just fine, as almost everyone has an extra charger lying around. Other manufacturers soon picked up this trend as well, starting with Xiaomi. Xiaomi recently released their new Mi 11 smartphone, which ships without a charger (although you can request a free one if you want). Samsung also did the same thing with their S21 launch, despite making fun of Apple for doing it. All smartphone manufacturers will most likely adopt this trend, so expect your future smartphones to ship without chargers.
- Cheaper material
Glass has been the material for almost all of the flagship/premium devices out there. However, recent launches have suggested that manufacturers are adopting cheaper alternatives for their high-end devices. The latest Samsung Galaxy S21’s body is made of aluminum and plastic, while Xiaomi Mi 11 and many other manufacturers have opted for vegan leather. This trend is expected to continue in 2021 and the upcoming years.
- More affordable high-end smartphones
One feature all of the high-end devices on the market have in common is their expensive price tags. Costliness has been an issue for most users who like to upgrade to the best phones once in a while. However, the latest few releases from the leading smartphone makers in the industry surprised everyone with their cheaper price tags or variants. This trend is expected to continue into the future, as production costs are also expected to drop dramatically due to the previously-mentioned points. The future flagship launches will either come at more affordable price tags or with a more affordable variant with similar specs.
